Finding the right hospital for you is linked to finding the best treatment option for you. The right hospital would ideally be one that not only has a good record in successfully treating conditions but doing so at reasonable costs; and if such a hospital is close to where you stay, then you should consider yourself lucky. Of course, if you were truly lucky you wouldn’t be getting admitted to a hospital in the first place. Looking up a good hospital is an activity best done when you’re not pressed to make a quick decision. In other words, do it now when your condition is under control or you are relatively healthy. If a situation arises, you will not be in a position to take a rational decision giving due consideration to all factors.

Here we discuss five ways you can find a hospital that is right for you –

1.	The first thing to keep in mind is that it is not only about finding the right hospital; you have to decide whether you actually should be going there. For example, in an emergency situation such as a premature birth or a stroke you cannot waste time traveling to a better-known facility that is further away as compared to the clinic that may not be that well-known, but given the situation that is where you will go. Finding the right hospital is a lot about finding a good hospital near you.

2.	Finding the right hospital basically entails asking a lot of questions. Know the right questions to ask. The questions need to revolve on your condition, the hospital’s record in treating the condition, costs involved, if your insurance company covers the costs, and if there is any travel involved. The hospital’s environment, cleanliness, fee structure, patient access to information should be considered. You should look up information on specialist doctors that will be in charge of your case. The internet is a great repository for answers to these and other similar questions. A hospital’s website will also have an FAQ section, if your query is not answered there, you should email them or get in touch with them telephonically.

3.	As mentioned earlier, the hospital has to be a good fit for your condition. Special situations such as various forms of cancer and childbirth are two very good examples of situations in which people are most likely to look for the best care and treatment possible. Nursing homes and hospitals have made great advances in making labor as smooth as possible and cancer is now eminently curable; several hospitals specialize in treating this once-dreaded condition. Non-profit organizations such as Consumers Checkbook and government resources such as Hospital Quality Compare inform you on quality of hospitals and also let you compare hospitals on various parameters.

4.	Listen to advice. Every once is a while it happens with a family that the treatment of a loved one does not progress as it should. It is sufficient to distract everyone in the family. At such times, you should have a frank talk with the concerned physician and more importantly with your family doctor. These two people are best placed to advice you on whether to continue treatment at the present location or move to another hospital; with their professional knowledge, they will even be able to tell you about the best hospital to go to, given the patient’s condition and financial situation.

5.	The hospital association of a state can answer a lot of questions that you may have. In America, the Joint Commission accredits hospitals; in many states the accreditation offered is a pre-condition for licensure. It is thus a badge of quality and you can expect the hospital to be up-to-date with policies, procedures, and standards related to healthcare.
